Visa

There are three types of residence in the Czech Republic:

  • short-term stay (holidays)
  • visas (long-term stay)
  • residence

Short term stays (holidays)

Nationals of all Western European countries can visit the Czech Republic without a visa for up to 90 days, and British and Irish citizens for up to 180 days. Nationals of the USA can stay for 30 days without a visa. Nationals of all other countries including Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa must obtain a visa, good for a stay of up to 30 days.

When applying for a visa you'll need one or two passport-size photos, and cash or money order for the fee which varies according to your nationality. Most Czech embassies in western capitals will accept applications by post if you include a self-addressed envelope with return cerified postage, and payment by postal money order - forms from the embassy or a travel agent. Processing is usually immediate for applications in person, and mail applications take about two working days. Visas are also issuued at the arrivals hall at Prague's Ruzyne Airport.

Long Term Stays

If you plan to stay longer than your visa (or visa-free) period, you're expected to register within two or three working days of your arrival, and apply for a visa extension, at the
Foreigners' Police & Passport Office (Uradovna cizinecke policie a pasove sluzby),
Tel: 279-543 at Olsanska 2, Zizkov, Prague 3 Tram: Olsanska (# 9, 5)

Money Change

It is recommended to go to one of the big banks, which generally have the best exchange rates, as well as the lowest commission (ca 2%). Several money withdraw machines can be found (both VISA and MASTER CARD), mostly in the centre of Prague. DO NOT exchange money on the black market. It is against the law and you run a big risk ending up with worthless bank notes. The lowest bank note is 20 Kc and the highest is 5.000 Kc.
