Prague MARKETS

There's a few bustling markets in Prague and fruit and vegetables can be a lot cheaper than in the supermarkets although in the winter the best selection is still found indoors. Some of the markets are very tourist orientated and might seem a bit tacky but there's goodies to be found in them and often some interesting art work is on display. There are also markets which occasionally spring up all over the tourist areas - Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square - which are not permanent fixtures and usually sell souvenirs and arts and craft.

HAVEL'S MARKET (Havelský trh)
Prague 1, Metro: Mustek (line A or B)

The most popular central Prague market, located on a short street that runs perpendicular to Melantrichova, the main route connecting Staromestské námestí with Václavské námestí, this open-air market (named well before Havel became president) features dozens of private vendors selling seasonal homegrown fruits and vegetables. Other goods, including drinks, toiletries, artwork, leather goods, flowers, and cheese, are also for sale. Prices here are generally lower than in supermarkets.

CHARLES BRIDGE
Prague 1, Metro: Staromestská (line A)

The best known bridge in Central Europe offers wide range of craft, jewelry, photography, paintings and other hand-made goods.

PRAZSKÁ TRZNICE
Prague 7, Metro: Vltavská (line C)

Prague's largest outdoor market. It is a vast network of kiosks with vendors selling an endless variety of consumer goods. Music blares from stands selling portable stereos, clothes billow in the wind next or liquor stands. Warehouse-size stores selling furniture and hardware are also found here. Produce prices are lower than in stores, but selection is often more limited.

PANKRÁC TRZNICE - indoor/outdoor market
Prague 4, Metro: Pankrác (line C)

Has many small outdoor stands offering some of the best seasonal produce available. Inside the large aluminum warehouse, stands sell dry goods, household products and electronics.

SOME OF THE BETTER OTHER SMALL MARKETS ARE:

  • Karlovo námestí, Prague 1,
    Metro: Karlovo nám. (line B)
Has good produce and a second-hand clothing vendor

  • Hradcanská, Prague 1,
    Metro: Hradcanská (line A)
    Has excellent produce

  • Palmovka, Prague 8,
    Metro: Palmovka (line B)
    Has a superior breadstand
